Burundian-Kenyan musician Kidum Kibido has shared intimate details about his remarkable journey from being a refugee to becoming a celebrated artist in Kenya. Speaking with Dr. Ofweneke, Kidum, now 50, reflected on the series of events that shaped his life and career.

Kidum's move to Kenya in 1995 was initially driven by misinformation. He had been led to believe that the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) would relocate him to Europe. “I came to Kenya because I was told UNHCR would take people to Europe,” Kidum revealed. However, upon arrival, he discovered that his path lay in music rather than Europe.

The singer also opened up about his past struggles with alcohol, a fear rooted in his father's battle with alcoholism. “Seeing my father suffer from alcoholism made me despise alcohol,” Kidum explained. It wasn't until he was 40 that he decided to try drinking, feeling he could now handle it responsibly.

Kidum’s personal life has been marked by both triumphs and challenges. Married three times, he is now settled with his third wife, Christina, and is the father of seven biological children and one adopted child. Reflecting on his earlier relationships, he acknowledged the impact of losing his father at a young age and the guidance he missed out on.

Despite the difficulties, Kidum expressed no regrets about his journey. He advised, “Don’t lie to people that you love them if you don’t. If you don’t love, don’t commit.” His story serves as a testament to resilience and the pursuit of one's passion against all odds.
