The Bronx, NY— The Bronx saw an iconic gathering this weekend as hip hop luminaries came together to celebrate the genre's 51st birthday. On Sunday, August 11, KRS-One, Fat Joe, MC Lyte, and other legendary figures, including Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Caz, Master Gee, Grandwizzard Theodore, and MC Sha Rock, participated in a “Walk This Way” march through the borough.

The march aimed to celebrate hip hop culture while promoting health and non-violence in urban communities. Attendees were treated to powerful speeches, including one from DMC, who stated, “We created Hip Hop so we didn’t have to glorify or celebrate all the negativity that is attacking and prevalent in our communities. We are the solution.”

KRS-One echoed this sentiment, highlighting the march’s significance. “With a healthy respect for our victorious past and an eye toward our glorious future, it is clear that only we have taken care of us, only we can take care of us, and only we will take care of us,” he told AllHipHop. He emphasized the importance of peace, love, and unity for the future of hip hop.

Following the event, KRS-One expressed gratitude on Instagram, noting, “Thank you to everyone who walked and rallied with us from The Birth Place Of Hip Hop to Cedar Park to Crotona Park in the Bronx. This concludes our Hip Hop 50th Year Anniversary, Happy Hip Hop 51!”

Fat Joe also shared his excitement, calling the day “a birthday to remember,” and MC Lyte reflected on the significance of the celebration, highlighting the importance of connecting with the roots of hip hop at its birthplace.

The march was not only a tribute to the past but also a call to action for the future of hip hop, emphasizing the role of the genre in addressing and overcoming societal challenges.
