Nairobi, May 23, 2024 — Azimio leader Raila Odinga has clarified why some of the leaders elected under his coalition accompanied President William Ruto to the United States. In a statement released on Wednesday, Raila explained that the leaders, including Governor Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay) and Wavinya Ndeti (Machakos), traveled to the US upon the invitation of the US government. National Assembly Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi is also part of the delegation.

Raila emphasized that all Azimio leaders accompanying President Ruto were officially invited by the US government and have received permission from both President Ruto and the coalition. This move aligns with established democratic traditions and serves the broader interests of the Kenyan nation, which Azimio represents.

The presence of Azimio leaders during President Ruto’s state visit has raised questions among some other leaders. However, Raila urged them to leverage this opportunity to address critical issues relevant to Kenya. These include promoting increased trade and investment, improving local healthcare opportunities, combating corruption, creating jobs, and enhancing access to information technology for the youth.

President Ruto’s state visit to the US includes engagements with various Congressional groups and the Bipartisan Congressional leadership on Capitol Hill. Additionally, he met with Kenyans living in the United States during his visit to Atlanta, Georgia.

President Biden also shared a light moment with President Ruto during a press interaction, playfully questioning the relevance of certain questions. Meanwhile, photos captured the warm reception of Ruto and Mama Rachel by US First Lady Jill Biden in Washington, DC.
