Thika, Kenya – The family of David Nduati, a 26-year-old boda boda rider, is demanding justice after he was reportedly shot dead by Gatundu South MP Gabriel Kagombe during a riot in Thika. The tragic incident has left the community in shock and the family grieving, with calls for accountability growing louder.
According to witnesses, the altercation occurred when supporters of MP Alice Ng’ang’a and Kamenu MCA Peter Mburu clashed at Kamenu Market over land allocation for small-scale businesses. In an attempt to disperse the crowd, police officers used teargas, but the situation escalated when MP Kagombe allegedly fired his gun indiscriminately, hitting Nduati and other civilians.
Nduati's elder brother, Alison Ndirangu, recounted the harrowing details of the day. "We were just trying to secure space for our stalls when chaos erupted. Suddenly, there was gunfire, and I watched as a bullet struck my brother," he said. Ndirangu described the devastating moment when Nduati fell to the ground, fatally wounded.
The incident also left 46-year-old Anthony Kamau critically injured, with a bullet lodged in his chest. Kamau is currently recovering at Thika Level 5 Hospital, where doctors are monitoring his condition closely. Additionally, Area Assistant County Commissioner Philomena Nzioki sustained injuries during the fray but has since been discharged from Avenue Hospital.
The family has recorded statements with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), but they claim there has been no significant progress in the case. Ndirangu expressed his frustration, stating, "The MP still has a gun, which means he may soon use it against another innocent civilian." He emphasized the urgent need for justice, not only for his brother but also to prevent further violence.
Nduati, who had recently moved to Thika to start a new life with his brother, leaves behind a grieving family, including their elderly mother, who relied on him for support. "Nduati was helping me take care of our mother. Now, that responsibility falls entirely on me," Ndirangu lamented.
As the family copes with their loss, they continue to hope that the authorities will take swift action against the accused politician. The tragic death of David Nduati has sparked a broader conversation about the use of firearms by public officials and the need for stringent measures to ensure public safety.
