The Nigerian film industry has lost one of its most iconic and beloved actors, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, who passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Evercare Hospital in Lagos, after suffering a cardiac arrest12.

Mr Ibu, who was born on October 17, 1961, in Enugu State, was a prolific actor, comedian, and producer, who starred in over 200 movies, both in Nigeria and abroad3. He was best known for his hilarious roles and facial expressions, which endeared him to millions of fans across Africa and beyond.


Some of his most memorable movies include Mr Ibu (2004), Mr Ibu in London (2004), Police Recruit (2003), Keziah (2007), and 9 Wives (2005). He also featured in several television shows, such as The Johnsons, Papa Ajasco, and Flatmates.

Mr Ibu had been battling with a mysterious and life-threatening illness for over a year, which had affected his mobility and speech4. He had appealed to his fans to pray for him and support him financially, as he sought treatment both locally and abroad.

His adopted daughter, Jasmine Okafor, had also taken to social media to solicit for help, saying that her father’s condition was deteriorating and that he needed urgent medical attention.

However, despite the efforts of his family, friends, and colleagues, Mr Ibu could not overcome his ailment, and he breathed his last on Saturday evening, surrounded by his loved ones.

The President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Emeka Rollas, confirmed the death of Mr Ibu on his Instagram page, saying that he was devastated by the news and that the industry had lost a legend.

He also revealed that Mr Ibu had suffered a cardiac arrest, according to his manager of 24 years, who had informed him of the sad development.

Rollas described Mr Ibu as a friend, a brother, and a mentor, who had contributed immensely to the growth and development of Nollywood. He said that Mr Ibu would be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He also condoled with the family of the deceased and prayed that God would grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.

The death of Mr Ibu has sparked an outpouring of grief and tributes from fans, colleagues, and celebrities, who have taken to social media to express their shock and sadness.

Many of them have also shared their favourite memories and movies of Mr Ibu, using the hashtag #RIPMrIbu.

One of his fans, who identified himself as Ken, wrote on Twitter: “Mr Ibu was one of the reasons I fell in love with Nollywood. He always made me laugh with his jokes and antics. He was a genius and a legend. Rest in peace, sir. You will never be forgotten.”

Another fan, who called herself Mary, wrote on Facebook: “I can’t believe Mr Ibu is gone. He was my favourite actor of all time. He always brightened my day with his comedy. He was a blessing to the world. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.”

Mr Ibu is survived by his wife, Stella Okafor, and four children.
