A 24-year-old man has pleaded guilty to the murder of his young wife, who he stabbed in the neck at their home in Croydon. Sahil Sharma appeared in custody at Kingston Crown Court on Thursday, where he admitted to killing Mehak Sharma on January 15, 2024.

The court heard that Sharma attacked his wife with a kitchen knife after an argument, and then called the emergency services to report what he had done. He told the operator: "I have just killed my wife. I stabbed her in the neck. She is not breathing."

Police and paramedics arrived at the scene and found Mehak Sharma lying on the floor with a fatal wound to her neck. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination confirmed that she died from a stab injury to the neck.

Sharma was arrested and charged with murder. He initially denied the charge, but changed his plea to guilty on the day of his trial. He will be sentenced on March 12, 2024.

Mehak Sharma was 19 years old and had married Sharma in India in 2022. She moved to the UK with him in 2023 and worked as a beautician. Her family described her as a "beautiful, kind and loving" person who had a bright future ahead of her.

Detective Chief Inspector Helen Rance, who led the investigation, said: "This was a tragic and senseless loss of a young life. Sahil Sharma brutally killed his wife in their home, where she should have felt safe and protected. He then showed no remorse or emotion, and calmly confessed to his crime. He has robbed Mehak's family of their daughter, sister and friend, and left them devastated. I hope his guilty plea and conviction will bring them some comfort and closure."
