A man died on the spot and another was critically injured after an electric pole fell on them while they were allegedly trying to tap electricity illegally in a village in Garissa County on Tuesday.

The incident happened at around 10 a.m. in Bulla Sagare, where the two men were using a ladder to connect wires from the main power line to their houses, according to witnesses.

The pole, which was old and rusty, could not withstand the weight of the men and the ladder and collapsed, crushing them underneath.

Residents who heard the loud bang rushed to the scene and found the two men lying on the ground, with wires and metal pieces scattered around them.

One of the men, identified as Abdi Hassan, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Garissa Referral Hospital, while the other, whose name was not disclosed, was admitted in critical condition.

Police officers from the Garissa Police Station arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area. They also confiscated the ladder and the wires that the men had used.

Garissa County Police Commander John Onditi confirmed the incident and said that investigations were underway to establish the circumstances that led to the accident.

He warned the public against tampering with electricity infrastructure, saying that it was not only illegal but also dangerous.

He urged the residents to report any cases of power theft or vandalism to the authorities, and to seek legal connections from the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC).

He also appealed to KPLC to replace the old and weak poles in the area to prevent similar accidents in the future.
