Nairobi residents faced a nightmare on January 13 as heavy rains caused floods and chaos in the city.

Some houses were submerged in flood waters, and roads were rendered impassable. Motorists were captured maneuvering flooded sections of roads on Mombasa Road, Kenyatta, and Haile Selassie avenues.

Pedestrians on the other hand sought help to cross roads as walking passages were flooded. Some people resorted to using boats or makeshift rafts to navigate the waterlogged streets.

The floods also disrupted businesses and public services, as some shops and offices were closed due to the water damage. Power outages and water shortages were also reported in some areas.

The Kenya Meteorological Department had issued a warning of heavy rainfall and flash floods in several parts of the country, including Nairobi, on January 12. The department advised people to avoid driving or walking through flooded areas, and to move to higher ground if possible.

The department also said that the rains were expected to continue until January 15, and urged people to be prepared for more flooding and landslides.

The floods have exposed the poor drainage and infrastructure in the city, which has been struggling to cope with the rapid urbanization and population growth. The government has been criticized for failing to address the recurrent flooding problem, which poses a threat to the lives and livelihoods of the residents.
